But Germany stunned the U.S. 3-0 victory in the semifinals, which led the U.S. Soccer faced the unprecedented task of hosting the tournament with just four months of preparation. Nineteen men have occupied the post since its inception, four of those in short-term caretaker manager roles. The matches have often struggled to interest fans, however, with games during the 1980s and 1990s attracting as few as 4,000 fans. The Men’s National Team, preparing for World Cup qualifying in 2004, finished in third place at the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Costa Rica.
